2023 Internship Application
Are you interested in improving your gardening skills and learning how to grow your own food and save your own seeds using organic and regenerative methods?
Rhythm Seed Farm is a new local nonprofit urban farm in the Cully neighborhood and we are seeking interns for this growing season. Our mission as a nonprofit is "To enhance social and environmental resilience by growing locally adapted seeds, distributing them to low-income and BIPOC communities, and empowering our members and partners to grow and save seeds of their own." We donate ½ of our entire seed crop to BIPOC and low income communities in the PNW, and the other ½ is sold to help fund our mission. In our first year as an organization we produced over 2.8 million seeds. These seeds represent the potential to create 180,000lbs of food, 100,000lbs of medicine, and over 45 million flowers!
Intern applicants must be 18 years of age or older, passionate about organic and regenerative garden practices, and have their own transportation to the farm. We do not currently have a budget to pay our interns, but that may change during the season if we receive grants or significant donations. I would love to pay you if we can make it happen! Interns are expected to work a minimum of 10 hours a week in the garden from April through October. If you can only work for part of the season that is okay, but we would prefer someone who will be with us from planting through harvest.
We are hiring for multiple intern positions, please let us know which position you are interested in:
Garden Intern – This position is for those interested in physical hands-on work in the garden. Duties include planting, weeding, fertilizing, watering, harvesting, cleaning seeds, etc. You will learn the ins and outs of crop planning, management, rotation, and varietal selection for seed saving. This is a great position for someone who already has a bit of garden experience and is looking to take it to the next level. You must be able to do the physical work in the garden (bending, kneeling, weeding, shoveling, wheelbarrowing loads of dirt, etc). Perks include free produce, seeds, and flowers out of the garden and personal healing through intimate connection with the land.
Social Media Marketing/Digital Content Intern - This position is for those who are interested in capturing photo/videos from the farm and assisting with the creation of educational and inspirational content for sharing via social media and our website. You must be familiar with Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and other social media sites and ideally know how to use Canva and other editing tools to produce high quality and captivating content. Bonus points if you have a background in photography or videography. This position is best suited for someone age 18-30 who has an intimate knowledge of the various social media apps. Perks include free produce, seeds, and flowers out of the garden.
Community Outreach Intern – This position is for those who enjoy networking and connecting with organizations and individuals that align with our mission. You will help connect our farm with communities in need and help to coordinate events and educational sessions at the farm and elsewhere. You must have an outgoing personality, a strong sense of community, and a passion for our mission. Bonus points if you are familiar with grant writing and/or fundraising. Perks include free produce, seeds, and flowers out of the garden, and the joy of spreading seeds to communities who are in need.
Seedhouse Intern – This position is generally only from October-June, so there will be some downtime in the summer (although you can totally help with other farm tasks during the summer, we would love that!). You will help organize our seed harvest from field to packet – this includes threshing, winnowing, cleaning, weighing, packaging, labeling, and shipping out seed orders. This is a great position for someone who doesn’t want to get their hands too dirty, as most of the work takes place inside. You must be detail oriented and organized, this is a position that requires focus and mindful engagement. Perks include free produce, seeds, and flowers out of the garden.
We are a young organization looking to build a strong foundation of solid individuals who share our passion for regenerating abundance in our communities. If you want to help with our mission but can’t commit to being an intern, please consider volunteering with us during a work party or donating to our organization. You can check our facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/rhythmseedfarm) or our website (www.rhythmseedfarm.org) to see our work party schedule or make a donation. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this post, please share it with anyone who you think might be interested in helping out. If we work together we can create a beautiful abundant future, but we can’t do it alone!
